A Courtyard Delight
In late 2003 we completed an exciting project in Renville, Co. Galway. Though still in its early stages the garden is already showcasing its beauty and potential. Designed for a family with young children it has an enclosed courtyard with that is beautifully planted up with ferns, ornamental grasses, Japanese maples and feature trees; Cornus Kousa ‘China Girl’ and the Tibetan cherry blossom, Prunus serrula.
Taxus bacatta hedging is used extensively throughout the garden to create structure and define the different areas from the kids trampoline play area, car parking and entrance driveway. The planter at the front of this house has been planted up with lots of bulbs and long flowering perennials with pops of pink included to complement the dramatic pink door.
Although the space is relatively compact, our goal was to design a garden that serves as both a fun play area for the kids and a beautiful entertainment space for adults surrounded by lush planting. The interplay of trees and carefully selected planting creates a visually engaging and unique outdoor space that evolves with each passing season.

“I cannot recommend Edel highly enough. We had a very tricky wish list for our garden; kids play area including trampoline, outdoor dining area, car parking, vegetable patch etc. We thought we presented Edel with the impossible and presumed we’d have to compromise however she managed to tick every box for us. She has given us our dream garden. She is so knowledgeable and professional. The work from the design to the planting of trees, shrubs and flowers has exceeded our hopes. Edel worked tirelessly until everything was perfect. Our garden is now our favourite place for the family to be”
